Lufenuron
About Lufenuron

Lufenuron is the largest product among benzoylurea insecticides, which accounted for 30% of global use of this group of insecticides. In 1993, Syngenta first marketed lufenuron in France for use in corn. Lufenuron's main market is in the field of animal health, which is used to control fleas on cats and dogs. Its insecticidal mechanism works by inhibiting the formation of chitin synthase in larvae, interfering with the deposition of chitin on the epidermis, causing insects to fail to molting and metamorphose and die.

Because of lufenuron’s unique mechanism of action of "eliminating insects and eggs", the market share of lufenuron is increasing and sales continue to grow. In 2016, the global sales of lufenuron was US$500 million.

China Registration

Lufenuron is mainly registered in citrus, vegetables, cotton, corn, fruit trees and other crops in China. It is highly effective against a variety of lepidopteran pests, and can also be used to control piercing and sucking mouthparts pests. As of May 2021, according to China Pesticide Registration Watch, there are 92 valid registrations of lufenuron in ICAMA, with 24 TC registrations. The most popular formulator partners of lufenuron includes emamectin benzoate, chlorfenapyr, chlorfenapyr, abamectin, profenofos.

Production & Supply

The production capacity of lufenuron in China is concentrated in Shandong Luba, Jiangsu Flag Chemical, Jiangsu Jiannong Agrochemical and Tonghua Pesticide Chemical Stock, etc. The main intermediates of lufenuron are 2,6-difluorobenzamide; and 2,5-dichlorophenol, with the latter mainly imported from India. At the beginning of 2020, due to the pandemic, overseas production experienced suspension, coupled with the short-term closure of ports, the supply of 2,5-dichlorophenol is almost out of stock, which has caused the price rising of lufenuron.

Recently, overseas production has resumed and ports have been opened one after another. The tight supply of 2,5-dichlorophenol has been effectively alleviated, and the price of lufenuron has also begun to gradually fall.
